This sequel to The Bride Price shows that family and compassion are celebrated, as three generations learn from their past and build the future. Myrna Chitundu’s dreams are realized when her former tutor forms a foundation for the education of gifted girls in her honor. Rose, the daughter of Myrna is selected as the first headmistress. She is dismissive of the traditional way of her mother and moves boldly ahead. As a result, she misses the cues of the society and family around her, and finds herself with two womanizers at the Academy, one of whom is her own uncle. The uncle exploits his female students and Rose’s young cousin is abducted.
Rose wants to make sweeping changes, but fails to recognize that society evolves. When she reads the diaries of her mother Myrna, she realizes there are family secrets that she has known nothing about. Rose has never dealt with people of other races. When the white benefactor returns to Zambia and falls in love with Myrna, Rose must look at her mother and the possibilities of different classes of people in a whole new way. This book shows the development from rote learning into a relational and strategic way of thinking. It also shows the power of love to teach.
