When Max O’Donnell moves into a quiet Chilterns village to get to know Luca, his son, Cat Cartwright’s sixth sense tells her there is trouble ahead. As the profane, irritable New Yorker is gradually accepted into the community, Cat has no choice but to watch the strengthening bond between father and son, knowing that Max isn’t all he seems.
Cat has been Luca’s childminder for almost ten years. Having known grief, divorce and depression, she has given up on ever finding love. Now she finds herself in a delicate triangle between Max and his ambitious former lover, Clair, who seethes with resentment at the closeness between Cat and her son. Her husband, Martin, is also Cat’s closest friend since primary school. This makes matters even more complicated, especially as Cat’s free-spirited ways prove alluring to Max as she guides him through the minefield of fatherhood.
However, Max is being harassed by persistent ghost who wants him to own up to the lie he has been living since September 11th. When the spirit infiltrates Cat and Luca’s dreams as well, Max knows it is only a matter of time before his carefully reconstructed persona is destroyed. He has to choose between drowning his problem in drink, as he has so often before, or face the truth and risk losing everyone he cares for.
A tale of ghosts, redemption, and the growing attraction between two very unlikely people.
