France, 1899. Dr Watson and Countess Volodymyrovna are invited to stay at an ancient Cathar fortress – in an area rife with wolves and lawless brigands. Their mysterious hostess, an opera singer known as The Singing Wolf, vanishes during the night.
Is there a murderer amongst their fellow guests, a lunatic at large, or a castle phantom? Is it a case of religious martyrdom or could her disappearance be related to legendary Cathar loot? Complicating the matter is the Countess’s growing attraction to Colonel James Isambard Moriarty; and his ardent pursuit of her affections.
