PREFACE
The great prophet Jeremiah was moved by the Spirit of God to declare to the people of his day in chapter 6 verse 16 of the book named after him: ‘Thus saith the Lord, ”Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.” But they said, We will not walk therein.’ We are here presented with a frightening scenario where a young man of God is being stalked even as he delivers God’s message to a people who have decided to say no to God.
In our day, similarly, it very much seems that the things of God in general and Christian consecration in particular have largely become matters of conjecture. This is despite the religious hoopla we see all around us. It is now not uncommon to find that there are different brands of Christianity around the Christian world as people choose to relate to God on their own terms. People simply want to do it their own way. To many in Christendom, what the Word of God insists on is secondary.
In many cases, key areas like Christian doctrine, Christian stewardship, the ministry of the Word, walking in the Spirit, Christian ministry, the relationship between the Word and the Spirit and many more are now subject to private, convenient interpretations. Depending on the ministries and groups involved, it is disturbing that people no longer shudder at the thought of bending the Word of God to suit their lives and ministries. The result of this has been a clear departure from the paths of spiritual rectitude, excellence and discipleship.
That Christians no longer ask questions is surprisingly the rule. It has become a sign of the times. People now meekly take whatever they are fed with. Not surprisingly, there are those who have come to realise that something is missing. It is because the glorious rest promised has eluded many. This has prompted a few to begin to ask questions. What have we left undone?
The truth is that until and unless believers turn back and again begin to walk in the old paths, the rest promised by God may remain out of bounds to many. The main issues relating to the old paths are thoroughly explained in this book in a way that the reader can relate to.
