This is the 75th anniversary year of the famous short story, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” by the remarkable humorist/essayist, James Thurber. The story was first published in the New Yorker magazine, has since appeared in countless anthologies and two movies. Mitty is immortalized in many dictionaries as “a commonplace unadventurous person who seeks escape from reality through daydreaming.” If possible, read the story first before you read this one. It’s available online.

This parody, “The Secret Life of Walther Middy,” is submitted as a heartfelt tribute to a highly talented master of our language and his off-beat observations of life in general. It was said of Thurber, “He doesn’t write about different things, he writes about things differently.”

This author had the privilege and pleasure of being on a radio program with Thurber not long before the man’s death and both chuckled when Thurber said he didn’t understand why his well-known and simple drawings of dogs weren’t recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club.
