Nelson Mandela had a difficult time trying to change South Africa for the better. He was imprisoned and contracted several diseases from the prison. These diseases would later end up killing him. Alan Paton wrote a novel about South Africa and their form of government at the time known as Apartheid. Nelson Mandela worked hard to abolish this form of government and finally succeeded in the late 1990’s.
