Explaining breast cancer, or any kind of cancer, to preschool children is very difficult but this book handles it exceptionally well. Written by Yvonne Crawley, herself a cancer survivor and mother of three, the book was inspired by her experiences explaining the situation to her own children. She wrote the book to help other parents in similar circumstances, and she’s done an excellent job.

Each page has a drawing, a simple stick figure drawn in black ink that looks like marker pen with highlights in various colours. The text is part of the image, written in large font that is easy to read. It cannot be enlarged through the kindle’s command screen, but it is a large size by default.

The vocabulary is very simple, although the two phrases Chemotherapy and radiotherapy might need to be explained. Most importantly it doesn’t condescend, simply sticking to the facts of what to expect and what should happen. This would be ideal to read with a parent or alone. For some reason this book insisted on opening halfway through. I’m not docking points for it, but it was just odd.

Overall as pre-school children’s non fiction, this would be extremely valuable for any parent who finds themselves in this situation.

Absolutely ideal for children, and I'll be recommending it to a few parents I know.

For its intended audience, children and parents who want to raise the issue of web safety, this is ideal. I'd even suggest it should be in school libraries.
  • Bees Like Flowers
An excellent, and well-illustrated non-fiction book about bees for very young children.
