Nwafor developed a deep love for the Christian way of life at a young age. He looked forward to the day he would become a priest of the Roman Catholic
Church and take over the running of his village church from the white priest, Fr. Marco van Brabant.

However in an African setting with a culture of perpetuatung the family name through the son, a life of celibacy in the priesthood could not be encouraged by his family as Nwafor was the only son of his late father.

Nwafor’s closeness to the Church and the local priest became a source of concern to the family. A meeting was summoned by the family head to find a way to separate him from the Catholic Church and the white priest the family thought was secretly initiating Nwafor into becoming a priest.
It was decided that Nwafor should be sent away from the village, placed under the tutelage of someone in a far away city, where he would serve and learn a trade. It was hoped that Nwafor afterwards would become a responsible man with a family of his own, thereby passing on his late father’s name to the next generation.
As fate would have it, Nwafor’s foster parents were strong Catholics that not only allowed him to live through his childhood dream but supported it. A young boy chased from his home, dream and mentor only to end up in the direction of his destiny.
