A Ketogenic diet is a low-carb and high-fat diet. An individual following this diet regime reduces the carbohydrate content of his or her diet. However, the uniqueness of the program lies in its high fat content. Traditionally, avoiding fat-rich foods is considered the key to losing weight. This is perhaps the reason why we see so many foods advertised as ‘fat-free’ and ‘low-fat’ foods.

It is important to understand that when a food is devoid of its fat content, it has to include something else to maintain its palatable nature. In most cases, companies choose to add chemicals or sugar for this purpose. This makes matter even worse. Fats are not as bad as they are advertised to be. For instance, there are good fats that aid vitamin absorption, support organ functionality and facilitate healthy brain functioning.

Before we move on to discussing Ketogenic foods and recipes, let us have a look at what ‘ketogenic’ means. The human body is accustomed to using carbohydrates as the fundamental source of energy and breaks them up using a process called glycolysis to generate energy. As a byproduct of this process, glucose is generated, which is then stored as fat in the body. Besides this, insulin levels of the body are also elevated during this process to facilitate fat storage.
